The Society of Fire Protection Engineers ( SFPE ) was established in 1950 and incorporated as in independent organization in 1971. It is the professional society representing those practicing the field of fire protection engineering. The Society has approximately 3500 members in the United States and abroad, and  51 chapters, 10 of which are outside the US. The purpose of the Society is to advance the science and practice of fire protection engineering and its allied fields, to maintain a high ethical standard among its members and to foster fire protection engineering education. The Society supports the development of the annual Professional Engineer licensing exam in fire protection and the grading of those exams under the auspices of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.  Several volunteer committees and task groups work under the Society's auspices on technical projects to further advance the state of the art.  The Society's activities include a series of educational seminars and short courses, technical symposia and conferences, books and publications, designed to advance the state of the art of fire protection engineering and provide technical information to the fire protection community.  The Society publishes a bimonthly newsletter, a peer reviewed quarterly Journal, and a quarterly technical magazine Fire Protection Engineering.

National Fire Protection Association -  NFPA is a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, and life safety to the public. Established in 1896, the mission of the international, nonprofit, member organization is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by developing and advocating scientifically based consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education. NFPA is currently developing the first consensus-based building code. For more information, read a brief overview of the association or a more detailed account of NFPA's rich history.

National Association of State Fire Marshals NASFM - is a very small organization. Without an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, we will never have more than 51 members  – one for each state and the District of Columbia. But, small as we are, communication among 51 government officials is no small feat. Therefore, our website's first goal is to serve our members. Our second goal is to help all others learn about NASFM's vision – for a safer America. Believe what you see in the national and international news about NASFM.  NASFM is – and will continue to be – outspoken when it comes to protecting human life, property and the environment from fire. But there is much more to the NASFM story beyond what you hear in the evening news.  Our Mission: "To protect human life, property and the environment from fire. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the State Fire Marshals' operation."

Occupational Safety and Health Act - OSHA 's mission is to send every worker home whole and healthy every day. Since the agency was created in 1971, workplace fatalities have been cut in half and occupational injury and illness rates have declined 40 percent. At the same time, U.S. employment has nearly doubled from 56 million workers at 3.5 million worksites to 105 million workers at nearly 6.9 million sites. The following milestones mark the agency's progress over the past 30 years in improving working environments for America's workforce.

American Society For Testing and Materials - ASTM - Providing the value, strength, and respect of marketplace consensus Mission - To be the foremost developer and provider of voluntary consensus standards, related technical information, and services having internationally recognized quality and applicability that promote public health and safety, and the overall quality of life;   contribute to the reliability of materials, products, systems and services; and facilitate national, regional, and international commerce.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology - NIST - is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Technology Administration. Established in 1901,* NIST strengthens the U.S. economy and improves the quality of life by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements, and standards.

The National Safety Council - Our mission is "to educate and influence society to adopt safety, health and environmental policies, practices and procedures that prevent and mitigate human suffering and economic losses arising from preventable causes."
